Doug,
The timing system on the detroit does allow adjustment to each individual injector.A common solution to low compression holes that smoke at idle is to essentially adjust the injector so it doesn't fire at idle or slightly above rendering the cylinder not active to eliminate the smoking at idle.
The draw back is you will lose some upper end rpm due to the retarted timing on the one cylinder.I've done this many times for guys who don't want a major overhaul because of one low hole and who's dock mates complain of the mosquito fogging when they start up.
BTW, If I could have one diesel for longevity and reliability, it would be a DD. The bad press they get is because of the marinizers who try and pull much more hp out of them then they are really designed to handle. That pretty much goes for all marine engines.
The 3208 is a great engine up to 375hp. Anything more is an accident waiting to happen. Now finding someone who really knows DD's and can repair them correctly is another thing.
