I called the canvas shop to complain and was given some information.

They commonly use a tape to hold the seems together while sewing. In my case, the tape is breaking down and getting sticky goop all over the place. They have called their product supplier to get some advice as to what to do. They said this is the first call they have gotten like this. I'm going to be nice to see if they can make good on it.
