I tried a sample glue up with 2 pieces of 3/4" thick scrap solid mahogany last night following cap't pat's suggestions with both edges run through the jointer before the epoxy glue up. I let it sit overnight and this morning before work I tried a destructive test by clamping 1/2 the piece into a vice and taking a framing hammer to the other half. It took several heavy blows with the hammer to break the piece and it failed within the wood.
If I get a chance tonight I will post pics of the helm.
