Small world... I went to buy some 3A Speed Master drives off a guy in VA. He had been to a government auction and he had 6 of these boats. I took two drives off this boat (or one of the sister ships) and two loose pairs. When I took the drives apart to check them out, there was still assembily grease on the berings/gears. The drives were completely rebuilt!!!!
The holes were made by fork lifts. It was done so that the boats were rendered unfit for service. The paint was ground off because it was some sort of new paint that was being tested (probably involves radar).
Even funnier about this small world, another one of these boats just showed up at my marina in CT.
I guess the guy is finally dumping the old junkers.
