Looks to me like the damage was deliberate and by a forklift, probably to render it unfit for service. The holes have too sharp an edge to be blown out, and the inside of the holes have to evidence of a shot, just a penetration by a set of forklift tangs. Probably a prototype made for the military that they did not like under the contract, and ordered it destroyed.
