You guys will surely laugh at this, but the best portable and small soldering instrument I've found is these little penis torch lighters. We bought them as gag gifts a while back and I had one left. I noticed that it shoots a really thin flame, so I tried it and it turns out it solders like a champ. When doing electrical work, just keep your pecker in your pocket and you'll be ready!
For bigger stuff (like #8 and up lugs) the black creme brulee (sp?) torches work really well. Those are adjustable to really low heat, so they work on heat-shrink tubing too without burning it. Both are better than the blue anchor torch made for the job, which costs $25 and breaks easily.
