I went out and picked up a small butane one. It also has a tip that they optimistically call a blow torch, which looks like it might be able to heat shrink some tubing on small pieces. At least it will seal the ends of small lines.
I also looked at the "Cold Heat" iron which Radio Shack had in stock. The fellow there said that it worked pretty well, but if you used it for more than a few moments it didn't really cool off instantly.... If it sounds too good to be true....
Also he reported that the special tip that makes the magic was easily damaged. Sounded OK for bench use, but upside-down under the flybridge or in a wireing locker you know its going to get dropped and banged around. The cold heat one didn't seem like a better choice as it really couldn't be counted on to go cold instantly. What could be worse than to think it had cooled when it actually hadn't? I rather just assume whatever I'm using is still hot.
