In Response To: Smith's Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (Dug)

I used the stuff on my rudder shelves, which were starting to rot a little but weren't too bad yet. I wanted to prolong their replacement as long as possible.

It is very thin and full of solvents, and it takes days for all the solvents to completely evaporate from the wood. Is the same viscosity as tap water. Seemed to penetrate well, and the wood was definitely improved and hard after. Out of curiosity I drilled a hole (that I later filled) and the stuff had penertated pretty deeply.

I followed that with a coat of West System Epoxy cut with alcohol, and then a final coat of straight west epoxy, ala Capt. Pat's recipe. The epoxy is definetly a better protective finish than was left after the very thin penetrating epoxy.

I've used the alcohol/west recipe on non-rotting wood as the first application too, and I think that the penetrating epoxy goes a little deeper.
