I recently tried two products that I saw on Ship Shape TV called Yacht Brite Buff Magic and Yacht Bright Pro Polish. Both of these products are used by SeaRay to polish gelcoat as their boats come out of the molds for the first time.
Buff Magic takes off any oxidation or blemishes. Pro Polish seals. The thing that attracted me to these products is they do not use any abrasive grits that take gelcoat off to do their job. Shambala still has her original gelcoat and it's in pretty decent shape (still looks well cared for). As most of you know, gelcoat becomes more porous as it is polished and waxed over the years. This is because the abrasives used in restorers and waxes literally take small amounts of the original gelcoat off. This in turn makes it more difficult to keep dirt out of the gelcoat.
I used to wax Shambala about three times a year to keep her shiny and without any areas of chaulky oxidation. I was becoming concerned about how much gelcoat was being removed at that rate of maintenance. That's why I jumped on a non-abrasive.
At this point I can report this: The results with these products were nothing short of spectatular. The Buff Magic did its job with much less elbow grease required than the standard waxes and polishes I have used. The shine on Shambala looked as good as the day I had a professional "burn" the gelcoat with a high rpm polisher and several different grits of polish (to bring her back after several years of neglect by the previous owner). The Pro Polish only added to the shininess. It truly is remarkable stuff.
I can't report yet on the longivity of the shine, but I'll know soon enough. At this point, I'm very pleased.
