Sean,
Not to get too technical but simply stated Single Sideband or mostly refered to as just sideband transmits on HF or aka "Shortwave" frequencies enabeling your signals to bounce off the Ionosphere and therefore comunicate to various parts of the world on different frequencies at different times of the day.VHF has a range of only 30 miles average to a base station and 8 miles or less boat to boat.
i.e If you're going well offshore like I do you should have sideband. If your not and stay close to shore then you do not need it. Dave K
