VHF is a FM system that operates on about 158-162 MHz and thus is line of sight only. SSB operates on 2-22 MHz and the signals will bounce off the ionasphere and give world wide coverage under the right conditions. SSB is like ham radio. SSB requires an extensive grounding system vs. VHF which does not.
