Jon,

The 1/16" will give you enough depth for the layer of glass and fairing. The crack itself should be opened up and reefed out enough to fill with the thickened resin, maybe a "V" grove 3/16" deep...

Also, if you wanted to, before filling the vent holes and glassing over the repair, you could mix up a batch of filled epoxy and shoot the strake fairly solid using a caulk tube.
