I just completed mine.
Use your wire charts for length. I used all 10GA tinned wire from Anchor. It's three wires (white, green and black) in a white casing. You can find the heat shrink connectors with the solder already inside the crimp housing to do it first class. Just crimp, heat until the solder starts to flow and let cool. The pre-tinned wire solders very easy in my opinion. Most of the newer panels have reverse poliarity indicators built in. I've seen many boats that have shore power plug in both sides of the cockpit. You also should read up on ABYC standards. I believe you have to have your main breaker within 10 feet of the shore power plug.
Don't forget to design in a galvonic isolator, while your at it.
