OT: N. Chesapeake Striper Info Sought

I would like to try some catch some stripers in the Northern Chesapeake with my family and friends. I want to start slowly with a minimum of time and funds invested. I have attended a couple seminars and done some reading but specific advice from experienced area anglers would be appreciated.

These types of questions are often not accompanied by a lot of background and I will try to provide that now:

I am an experienced boater, fisherman and former Great Lakes charter captain, but I have no experience fishing the Chesapeake.

Boat(s): I have a 28’ Bertram and a 16’ aluminum vee-hull w/ a 20 hp merc. The Bertram has outriggers but I am contemplating removing and storing them since the boat will be used more for cruising than fishing.

Crew: I have three kids, any other crews would likely be 2-4 marginally experienced anglers

Equipment: I have three rigs similar to this one: 7’ med-heavy action ugly stick w/ 12 test line on an appropriate spinning or bait cast reel. I would rather not invest in larger level wind rigs until I have a feel for where and how I will be fishing. On the other hand I probably need a few more rigs so maybe slightly heavier equipment would be the best place to put the money…

Methods: I would rather drift cast or vertical jig than troll, I guess. But I want to get results; I don’t want to put the time and effort into going out w/o a fair chance of catching some fish. I am wondering if the size and draft of the Bertram will dictate where and how I fish to some extent.

Distance: I would like to fish w/in an hours run of my dock if possible (I dock on the Middle River and cruise around 20 knots) I might be interesting in the occasional longer run or in combining a little fishing with sight seeing cruises further south.

Expectations: To start quantity would be more important that size. I would be very happy to put some smaller keepers in the cooler (and broiler) and leave the trophies for next year. I’m not expecting limits but nobody likes to get skunked either!

Hopefully that’s enough to go on. Feel free to contact me directly and thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice.
