Sometimes they just get something stuck between the graphite and the stainless ring. Although this has not happened to me over the 4 years I have had them. I believe it is in the instructions to just pull the ring away and let the water clean out the surface. I know the instruction were very specific about how much tension there needs to be. I think on my 1 3/8 shafts it was 3/4 inch compression.
