Had to turn back

We had a little weather on the west coast this past Friday and of course my B31 was in the middle of it. The outer waters had small craft warnings but not the inside channel to Catalina Island. About 8 miles out I ran into 6-8 foot seas and 35 MPH wind, and there was a real tight period between the swells. We were taking water over the top but still making 12 MPH. Then we nosed into a swell and didn't lift over it and I got to see my back deck as a swimming pool. The next swell really lifted the bow and then some of my electrical instruments stopped working. In all my years, this was the first time I turned back for home. When I got back to the dock, I figured out that a flashlight and some charts under the bridge must have gone airborne and slammed into the breaker panel turning off the radar and VHF. We waited a couple of hours and headed back out for a good weekend at the islands. A couple of good lessons learned...believe weather forecasts and don't have loose things near your breaker panel.
