dripless seals [shafts]

was out fishing today and notice my bilge pump going on traced the problem back to the starboard dripless coupling, i looseend the stainless coupling plate that pushes against the rubber boot and moved back tighter to the boot, that stoped the leak, question , does the rubber boot have to be replaced or should i be looking further into this seal.
