Jeff,
Use less MEKP... Normal activation is 2%, cutting back to 1 1/2% should get you there. There is no harm in slow kick, the real harm is from over firing the resin with above 4% MEKP. Never add solvents! If a thinner resin is desired, use Patch Booster or styrine.
Use twice the MEKP for gelcoat...
