Walter,
You are correct that it is a Coast Guard requirement that gas engines have metal fuel lines. There are two areas where using flexible fuel line will cause you problems: The first is when your insurance company arbitrarily asks you to have the boat surveyed because they want a more current survey. If your surveyor catches that you have flexible fuel lines, your insurance company will require that they be replaced. If you don't replace it and something happens, well you know what the result will be...no money.
The second is if you are ever boarded by the Coast Guard for a routine "safety inspection." I was boarded for a safety inspection and was written up for having noncompliant fuel lines. In my case, I didn't even know it was a problem. There was no mention in my survey about this at the time of purchase.
Hope that helps.
