Gerry,
I have a Kenwood CD/Sirius Satellite Radio receiver, two Sony 250 watt amps, two 6x9 Polyplanar speakers in the cockpit, two Polyplanar 8" speakers in the pilasters, two Polyplanar 6" speakers in the cabin, and two Polyplanar 6x9 speakers on the flybridge. Can you listen to music while cruising on Shambala? ;) You bet. When I designed the layout for the stereo, I wanted to be able to move around the boat and have the volume level be the same no matter where I was in the boat. Mission definitely accomplished.
I will say this: My amps make all the difference in the world. If you are going to run amps like I did, it is best to run a new circuit to EACH of the amps INDIVIDUALLY. What I found was that because of the resistence in all the wiring necessary (power to amps in the space above the cabin ceiling where it's driest and receiver on the flybridge, plus long lengths of speaker wire throughout the boat), you will use a considerable amount of power to drive the music. The stock circuits on Shambala had had additional items tapped into them over the years (washdown pumps, baitwell pumps, head macerator, lots more electronics than were ever contemplated during design, etc) so that it didn't take much to pop the circuit breaker at moderate volume levels if you were using other items.
The net result on Shambala was very nice. There's nothing like some good ole' rock & roll to take the edge off of people when it's a little snotty out...a little Jimmy Buffett during happy hour, and perhaps my favorite...listening to some good Cuban music like Buena Vista Social Club when trolling. Trolling along on a nice sunny day with Buena Vista Social Club playing makes me feel like Ernest Hemingway. It's almost annoying to have to get up to fight a fish.
Good luck. Just run clean power and you'll be fine.
