Nasty heat exchanger

I'm also wondering if this has anything to do with my motor running a little hot. Can I expect my pencil zinc to be shot or does it work on the inside of the exchanger only?

BTW, A few weeks ago I ran this boat 8 hours up the bay w/ no problem or fluxuations on the gauges.
