I'll defer to Chiles as the expert but I put a Furuno 400 series (I think) with an Airmar adjustable in-hull transducer set at about 22-24 degrees and am very pleased with what I get. Would I get better with a thru-hull? Probably yes, but then have trailer worries. If you have already purchased the Airmar, you can experiment with the angle using silicone. The important thing is no air or bubbles between the transducer face and hull.
