Capt. Patrick:
Good tips on the vacum bagging. With the help of a fishing buddy, who is also a professional fiberglass man, I vacum bagged the new cabin sole in my boat. You are right about doing some test pieces, but what I wanted to comment on even more was your suggestion about a catch basin for the excess resin.
Even though we used a very precise scale in measuring the amount of resin we were putting in the cabin sole, the vacum still was able to draw a fair amount of resin through the materials. One trick that my buddy used was to stuff the catch bin with the same green foam that we used in the vacum bagging process. In effect, he created a filter inside of the catch bin, so that no resin would get to the vacum itself.
NICE Tips, especially since I had done some already, you made it very easy to follow. I think your point about plywood and cinderblocks was a great and simple method.
