I'm in the process of molding up 2 hatches for my Bertram 25 and would like some info on layup schedules and coring materials. The hatch will be 4'x6' and cover the fuel tanks and a second one covering the center depression.
I've read and mostly understand the tips and tricks articles on basic box mold and vaccum bagging and have done a sample layup using techniques in those two articles. I've built a cheap mold and am getting ready to do the final product. I've purchased plenty of 1.5oz mat and 24oz woven roving and 5 gals of laminating resin. I do not plan on gelcoating the part but painting it with the rest of the boat later on.
1st - how much glass, my guess at the layup schedule is
1 or 2 layers of 1.5mat
1 layer 24oz roving
1 layer of 1.5 mat
1 layer 24oz roving
? vaccum bag it (how long)
1 layer of 1.5 mat
Core Material
? vaccum bag it (how long)
1 layer 1.5 oz mat
1 layer 24oz roving
? vaccum bag it (how long)2nd Coring Material? I'm leaning towards balsa with a second choice cheap marine ply.
The original was balsa and it did fine till a previous owner poked some holes in it and didn't properly seal them. From what I've read dealing with balsa coring is easier to ensure a proper bond with the other laminates because it wicks the resin into the material and creates a better bond.
Is there any reason not to use balsa?
Any advice?
