rudder tie bar

Well I was putting the props and shafts back on the 28b after replacing the cutlass bearings when I noticed excessive play in the rudder. Examination has determined that the tie bar is shot- and is not going to come apart after 30 plus yrs in one spot. I am thinking of replacing this setup with heim joints and a adjusting bar---any input--I have not really seen any options out there in any of my books. My bar is 46 3/4" center to center of the rudder arms. I would grind and press out the old ball stud--replace with a 1/2 ss bolt thru the arm and heim joint--joined together with a adj bar.
Ideas guys?Thanks in advance
