That sounds right a full 1 inch thick would be nice. Factorys were teak.Countersink the head in the wood ,pilot hole the wood and the deck for sized screw and screw it into the deck. Then you either screw thru the side panel to fasten it to the wood or you sandwhich the side panel with a finish piece of Teak and drill and screw the teak finish thru the side panel and into the wood
