Engine beds and Chryslers

Has anyone used 1.5" starboard doubled up and lag bolted to the stringers to make an engine bed? I had the engines pulled on my 28 today to replace the beds. They were the ultimate reason the stern tubes and stuffing boxes gave way and leaked. The engines over time had sunk at least half an inch into the wood which was not glassed. By the way the engines are chrysler 318's rated at 240 hp. I can't wait to get her back together to see how it runs. Bought couple months ago and just getting her fixed up. Any thoughts on cruise rpm/speed and top speed and rpm. Thanks for the input. Kevin
