I had an II Morrow Loran A and was determined to be able to do a fix in less than 20 minutes, so brought it home, set it up in the shop and practiced for days. Got to where I could recognize them little wave forms, click the knobs to move the "stool" under it and get one LOP in about 20 seconds, then the other. Then to the loran chart with protractor in hand, shoot, I got real good at it. Put it back on the boat and first fix I took was off by 27 n.m. Sky wave? What's a sky wave? Dhhhhhhh. Agree with all, GPS (and before that, Loran C) is so precise it's scary, but wonderful.
