Bruce,
It's gas, those fuel injected supercharged Mazda Rotary engines. They have a fuel cooling loop in the return side that allows the unused fuel to to back into the pump downstream from the sensors.

The wire may very well be 18 GA, but it is definately shielded and I did ground the bare shielding wire for that reason.
