Agree 100%. The magnetic compass is a must, and boxing it now and then, especially when you add anything near it, even a wire, is a must do. But on the other hand, when the old Danforth agrees plus or minus a few degrees with the electronic chart plotter one, and with the fluxgate on the autopilot, it does sorta take all the stress out of navigating. The big Garmin 2010C has sort of spoiled me with it's incredible accuracy and ease of use. And you can SEE it. I now dream of an autopilot that will track down to a quarter of a degree since I now like to keep the cross track bearing under a boat length, or 31' when running to a waypoint. It annoys me to have to click a degree on the pilot port or stb. now and then. Yes, I am easily entertained. Far cry from the days of navigating with a compass, watch, and grease chart and you pretty much never knew for sure where you were. Those were the bad ole days.
