If we're looking for cheap alternatives, then a wooden stick with notches would be the way to go.

If you want something that measures fuel usage accuratly, then Floscan is the way to go.

Not knocking the digital fuel sender but let me give you a senario.

The average boater doesn't run his tank down to dry before refilling, so usuable fuel to 95% of boaters is not a concern and neither is fuel usage or running out of fuel.

Now suppose we plan a trip 200 miles away with no fuel stops. We calculate that doing 75% cruise speed we can make that distance with 30 gallons of usuable fuel to spare in good sea conditions.

Check weather, load boat and we're off. Half way there the sea conditions pick up with a good headwind. A quick calculation and we have to back down on speed to make it.

Which unit would you rather have?
One that measures fuel level and converts to gallons used or one that is actually measuring fuel burn?

The only alternative to a floscan would be another fuel flow measuring device.

I have to say that 90% of the floscan units I install are just another toy and will never be used as intended. The other thing is if you know what fuel capacity you carry, a dozen runs with your boat at different speeds and sea conditions will give you a general idea of how much fuel you burn. An enclosed float sender and good gauge will allow you good calculations on fuel used and left. You can have a good sender, I had one on my boat.

The boat I just sold I had since 97'. It didn't take long to figure out how much fuel I used on a days running. A couple of years ago I installed the floscan 9000 with gps nema input, I had a spare it was free.
It didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know but got me more money for the boat when I sold it.

If I had planned on using the boat to its maximum usable fuel capacity, then it would have been a valuble asset.

By the way, istallation is easy for the units that anyone here would need.
