Walter: They are absorbed glass mat batteries. Each cell is composed of a layer of lead mesh and a layer of fiberglass mat rolled together like a Little Debbie snack! The acid is absorbed in the mat so there is no liquid. They don't off gas and can be mounted upside down if you want. The cells are set vertically side by side like a six pack. They seem very well built and come in starting or starting/deep cycle configuration. My friends and I now have them in three boats, all with multiple battery configurations, as well as several cars. Best I've tried so far, but I have't tried the Odeseys yet. Good news is you can buy them at many more places, including Advance Auto and Costco. Rawleigh
