Interesting Antifoul Problem

Buddy ran into a strange problem and curious to see if it actually that strange or out of the ordinary.

Couple years ago he did the Barrier Coat thing and switched over to the ablative paint, mostly to avoid the yearly sanding, painting ritual.

That year he had a major electrolysis problem and corrected it the following season. Slapped a new coat of bottom paint on and was launched. That year he had a problem with growth, tons of it around the underwater hardware. I scraped it twice that season for him in the water. When the boat came out still plenty of paint, and it was hard.

Following year he put an extra coat or two in those places and thru in some cayenne pepper for whatever reason. Same thing two scrapings to remove the growth.

So this year he called interlux and told them about the problem, they actually sent someone down and check it out. They agreed the paint turned hard and thus new paint would not stick, therefore the growth problem. As to why the paint became hard, they really couln't offer a reason other then a reaction between the paint, the metal and the electrolisis. They suggested remove all the old paint, from the hull and underwater hardware, seal up the hardware with their several part coating, which they GAVE him and repaint the bottom.

If I told you the paint won't come off with sandpaper, would you believe me. Hell several sheets in a little 2' x 2' area didn't take a layer of antifoul off. Just ground the abrasive off the paper. He's actually got to chemically strip the stuff off. Even that takes several applications to get down to the barrier coat.
