I second the voltmeter idea. Get an inexpensive multimeter from your nearby radio shack. This will test for resistence, continuity and volts. either ac or dc. Once you have one you'll wonder why it took you so long to get one!
Also get a couple of lengths of wire with alligator clips at each end... handy for attaching one lead of the meter to a known good ground while you poke around with the other looking for good positive leads.....or for jumping across suspected breaks.

Ive got one about 4 feet long I use all the time, but I also keep one about 15 feet long for getting that extra-long reach to "Ring out" suspicious wire runs etc.
