Cockpit Side Panel Insulation??? *PIC*

The picture below is of the transom panel taken off Shambala. It shows insulation that was attached to the panel that I am assuming was there to deaden sound. Is that what this insulation was used for?

What type of insulation, if any, should I use to replace it when I reinstall the new panels?
