BRUCE: I am actually in the process of flushing the fresh side of the cooling system in the exact same manner you described. Was quite dirty in there, the last Owner didn't do crap for the engines. As for the raw-water side, I've got a buddy that owns a radiator shop, and he cleans heat exchangers for boat mechanic clients by soaking them in muriatc acid overnight, tube bundle and the body. I can't figure how soaking them in-place would be more dangerous or would remove material from the tubes if cooking them outside in okay. Please enlighten me if I have missed something.

CHARLIE: it was your posts (and a few others) on boatdiesel that got me thinking about this method to begin with. Is the reason that you pump acid into the zinc plug hole because you don't want acid in your water pump? It seems that, on my motor anyway, if you sent enough acid in there it would probably run backwards through the system and into the water pump. Do you see this (or anything else) as a reason not to bring in the acid solution through the seawater pickups?

JOE: thanks, I'm glad you have had this done too. Do you remember where they pumped the acid in from? And Yes, that is a good woman I've got. She did it right too: spent days scraping, wire brushing, degreasing with acetone, and applying ospho before the paint job.
