The Volvo D3 is an amazing little powerplant. I have a top end over 40 kts but I'm underturning by around 480 rpm, so I'm changing props as soon as I take the shrinkwrap off this week. At 3100 rpm, I cruise at 28kts. At that level, I burn under 5 gph. With the 75 gal tank I put in, my range is huge. The weight of this entire package is 582 lbs, which is almost identical to the old 165 package that was in her. If you plan a weightier package, you need to offset that weight forward of the ass-heavy nature of the boat will be even worse.

Getting back to the tank issue, Using the original tank pad as a guide, I replaced it in the same position except I added 20 inches to the forward part of it to accomodate the extra tank length. Additionally, I heightened the tank and built it so that it fits very tightly into the space. Bottom line is that I added a fair amount of weight forward , but still very close to the balance point. The result was that the boat sits on her lines as she should. One thing I did in the rebuild process was to raise the deck level an inch so that the self-sinking B20 is self-bailing with SeaStop scuppers. When I do the next one, I'm adding another inch of deck height which will make it perfect without compromising room in the boat and still maintain more than adequate gunwale height...
