I have flushed my raw water side twice with acid. My Cat mechanic also recommended the proceedure. I remove the pencil zincs like you have been instructed; but I pump the acid in with a small plastic drill pump.
By the way when a shop cleans your exchanger they soak it in hot acid. I have done a little experiment. I put some old pencil zincs in an old heat exchanger and let it cook for hours. The acid attacked the zinc and did almost nothing to the heat exchanger. This talk about doing harm to you system is overstated. I do use straight acid for 30 minutes and than 5 gallons of fresh water followed by a 30 minute run down the bay to get all systems flushed. I have the raw water tranny exchangers.
