The red fluid is anti foaming hydraulic fluid that can be purchased very inexpensively (compared to marine) at an airplane mechanics supply store. I got a gallon for the price of a quart of teleflex fluid from East Hampton airport. Teleflex bought Hydnautic and their hydraulic fluid is no longer red. They claim you can mix them. I prefer red though because I can see it and know it's a steering leak as opposed to something else. The key is anti-foaming. A rocking boat (or airplane) can generate bubbles in your fluid and you don't want air in your steering system. The red stuff isn't transmission fuid, although in an emergency you can use anything to get back. Walter
