John- My three hatches are made on mahohany frames to which the plywood is screwed from the top. The flat head screws are flush to the top surface. In my case, the plywood is covered with contact cemented linoleum and edged with aluminum trim. They are each thru-drilled on one end so a lift latch with a slightly rounded head can be put through and bolted in the back. These drop flush when the hatches ade down, but can be lifted to remove the hatches for access to the bilge. The frames are about 1 1/2" x 3" and I assume prevent warping. The two largest hatches have an extra piece of Mahoghany running the short way halfway across in the middle. I painted the undersides.
