closing seacocks probably causes more problems than it saves...too easy to forget to re-open them. a few years ago, while changing the Racors i closed the main fuel tank shut-off valves...changed the elements and left for the day. Came back the next weekend - loaded up my gear, pulled out of the slip for a day of fishing...4am...still dark. Got about 100ft from the slip...both engines started to shutter...then stalled - which left me drifting, in the dark...and the tide carrying me towards a concrete bridge that my boat would not fit under. Temporary panic. Then a moment of common sense...what changed since last weekend...think...ah crap - i remembered. Opened the shutoffs, heard a whoosing sound. Luckily, the engines didn't get any air - and both started right up - disaster avoided. Now, anytime i close a seacock or fuel valve for any reason, i have the starting key on the handle of the valve to make it impossible for me to forget to re-open it.
