Much like the "P" envy which impacts some women, more than one B31 owner covets the generous flybridge, the expansive cabin, and the remarkable head sea performance of the B28. They may also be tortured by the idea that the B28 was designed as a replacement for the B31 and attempted to address some of the purported design shortfalls of the B31. I personally don't buy into any of that better/best nonsense. Its all a series of trade offs. Nevertheless, some B31 and B25 owners have gone to all sorts of lengths to disparage the B28. Its kinda like siblings arguing.
Of course, there are Hyena boats, then there is The Hyena - aka Lil Bert out of Houston, Texas. A vessel that has twice made the 375 n.m. (each way) passage to the UVI. The vessel is currently being repowered, and if timely completed and weather permitting, will attempt a 360 n.m. crossing of the open Gulf of Mexico in route to this year's UVI. This possible feat, reminiscent of the actual events that made the B31's legendary in the early 60's, shakes the very foundations upon which the B31 cult have been erected.
All the while, the shocking results of last year's UVI will forever remain a painfull memory for some B31 owners. As one participant murmured mournfully:
You live, you die, but hell must be frozen over, because The Hyena won the UVI.
