Low Voltage on Gen Set.

My generator (Northern Lights-5kw) is putting out about 98 volts at 62 hz no load. (Spec is 121 @ 62Hz) Manual says I can use the "Hand Trimmer" on the "Automatic Voltage Regulator" to adjust it up. The AVR is inside the control box. Is there any tricks or safety precautions I should know about before trying this? Do I adjust with the gen set running or down? Don't want "fried coonass" to be on the menu this weekend.
