Ian,

Use epoxy... Period.

The replacement transom core is probably going to be wood, and anything other than epoxy ain't gonna' cut it. Just because there are multiple poly to poly tabbings through out the boat, isn't a valid argument for continuing to use polyester.

The number of instances where factory poly tabbing is coming loose on these old boats is proof in itself that secondary poly bonds suck.

A primary bond is one that allows cross linking of molecules. A secondary bond is only an adhesive bond. Polyester and vinylester are not true adhesives, epoxy is.

Primary bonds must be made within 24 hours...

Yes, it is possible to achieve a good polyester/vinylester to polyester/vinylester secondary bonding, but it requires sophisticated surface prep and glassing techniques.

Most fiberglass techs, (myself included), hate using epoxy for a host of reasons, mainly because of curing times and difficulty in sanding/grinding. But where wood is involved, the area is structural & subject to moisture intrusion, epoxy is the best choice.
