Rub rail installation question!!!

The boat is prepped and ready for me to begin installing the new rub rail kit courtesy of Patrick. Boy was it wonderful when the shrink wrap came off on Sunday!
The big question is this. Should I use the solid stainless steel cap rail or the hollow back???? Right now I am leaning towards the hollow, as I can buy 5 sections each 12' long for the price of one solid. That would make it much easier to replace if need be.
Those of you who have replaced the rail on your boats, what did you use?
Also, will I need to remove any semblance of old bedding compound? There are no really big globs, just shreds. I do plan to clean it up, but didn't know if I needed to scrape to bare gelcoat...
Also, I got two of the three windows into the aft section of the cabin. They look good. It would have been 3 out of three if I hadn't broken one... Lets not go there...
