Grounding Plates

Not sure if everyone has these, but I have 2 grounding plates on the bottom of the hull. I know that they are not supposed to be painted with bottom paint. My question is this...is there anything short of donning mask and fins and going under during the season to prevent barnacle growth? Each plate had about 2 inches of barnacles on them. The rest of the boat came out pretty clean with a few barnacles on the shafts near the hull and a few inside 1 thru hull fitting.
