Strut install

Getting ready to reinstall the struts on our '63 31. Bearings have been pressed into the struts and set screw holes retapped. I checked the building tips section but couldn't find a process for putting the struts back with the original tapered buildup. My problem is when I took the struts off there was a build up of 1/8" at the rear of the struts which tapered down to about nothing at the front of the strut. Not sure how they originally built this up but it came off in pieces of varying thickness. Should I get the struts and shafts in position with the shafts centered through the shaft log and then proceed to cram a mixture of resin chopped glass and cabosil in between the hull and the strut? Not sure how to get the buildup under the strut. I did follow Cap Pat's procedure for the backing plate and it looks nice and solid. Sure could use some advice from the pros. Thanks.
