In my view, there's nothing easier than a Garmin. I'm on my second one (a 182C). The first one was a 160. Both were very user friendly and could be used without reading the instructions.
Although I've never used a Northstar, I have used Raytheon's and Standard/Horizon's. The Raytheon was a little confusing and the Standard/Horizon was nearly beyond comprehension. My 82 year old uncle went out and bought the Standard after seeing my Garmin. He thought they were all the same. He then asked me to show him how to use it. After about a 1/2 hour I asked him for the directions and told him we'd take another stab the next day. I went home and read the instructions cover to cover, but it didn't really help.
He has since sold that boat (a Grady) and bought a brand new boat (not sure which make). I told him not to buy anything until he spoke with me.
Also, Garmin's customer service is top notch. My only complaint is that they don't have a fuel monitoring system like the Navmans do.
Regards,
Doug L.
