1. I've replaced a lot of engines over the years on newly purchased boats that were not engine surveyed.
That being said, most of what has been said rings true. I would do an oil sample at best. Make sure the sample is hot, old oil and drain a half a quart and take the last bit as the sample.
If you take it from an oil change pump, you can be looking at non used oil in the lines unless a fair amount is removed.As far as survey costs go, I charge by the hour like my regular work.
I did a complete engine and gen set survey on a Azimuth owned by Tico Torres, the drummer for Bon Jovi thatsup for sale last week on a pair of 3126 Cats. 4 hours, 240.00 bucks.
I did find some minor problems that unless you knew that model engine would have cost money down the road. As it turned out Tico is fixing the problems for the buyer and is not to bad a Capt for a musician.
The way around the busy dealer thing is find a dealer in the area where you are going to keep the boat. Call them up and tell them they will be getting the service business if you buy the boat.
Sometimes that works.
