In Response To: Strut backing question (Patrick)

Patrick,
The strut pads (should) provide structural strength as well as additional meat to bolt through. Capt. Patrick recently replaced mine (along with new struts, shafts, etc.) after I hit a channel marker that had sheared off by another vessel the previous evening. Upon impact the strut punched through the hull lifting the strut pad and allowing a large amount of water to reach the wrong side of the hull. Had the strut pad been properly bonded to the hull I am convinced the strut would have taken the brunt of the damage. I believe it is very important to have the strut pads properly installed. In your yards defense, unless specifially asked to do the work I don't think many would do any more than they did. I also agree with Rawleigh. Unless the engines were moved the shaft log's would go back in the same place. I'm sure Capt. Patrick will be chiming in as well. Good Luck
